The Myth Driving the Show

In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first woman on earth. Zeus ordered Hephaetus, the god of craftsmanship, to create her and he did, using water and earth. The gods endowed her with many talents; Aphrodite gave her beauty, Apollo music, Hermes persuasion, and so forth. Hence her name: Pandora, "all-gifted".
When Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus took vengeance by presenting Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus' brother. With her, Pandora had a jar (or box) which she was not to open under any circumstance. Impelled by her natural curiosity, Pandora opened the jar, and all evil contained escaped and spread over the earth. She hastened to close the lid, but the whole contents of the jar had escaped, except for one thing which lay at the bottom, and that was Hope.

Pandora's Toy Box Hype

OK. I'm still being tight-lipped about who's going to be in the show. However, I will share what platform toys are being transformed.

The most requested toys by the artists came from the Jamungo line up. There'll be customized BUDs and Nades. There's even a Sqwert project or two if I remember correctly. One, in particular, I know will bring some interest from you gig poster folks. FERG and VanBeater are way hot right now. Lots of good things cookin' from these guys.

While Jamungo may have the biggest presence in the show there'll be plenty of other good digs.

Check out these funky platforms from Think Up. Jeremi Rimel, the brain behind Think-Up, has already crafted a few of these into wicked works of art. There's a couple of these in the line up. We look forward to doing some more shows with this platform.

Another item being reworked for the show is the Bizarregoylz from Monster Bucket Studios. Monster Bucket Studios began in 2007 as a creative outlet for founder Jared Gagne. Look for more platforms from MBS as well as a Series 2 Bizarregoylz.

Rounding out the list of toys being altered for the show is the Cre8tive Peeples line of DIY items.

It should be a swell time in Charleston when we open Pandora's Toy Box. Come into town and help us pack the house. I hope to see you there.

Pandora's Box Giveaway

I've just sent off the approval for the next ad in Hi-Fructose Magazine. It plugs the site as well as the Pandora's show.

There are 28 artists committed to the line up. About 13 are folks I was originally acquainted with through the gig poster scene.

I'm still not ready to release the artist list for this show. However, I am ready to start hyping it a bit. So here's what I'm going to do for now. The first person to guess ten of the gig poster folks involved in the show will get a tube stuffed with an item from each of those artists.

Please leave your guesses in the comments area of this post. Guess as many times as you like. Once someone nails it I'll announce the winner. Contest void once Hi-Frustose is released in March. Artists partaking in Pandora's Toy Box are not eligible. Employees of Hi-Fructose Magazine and any of their agents are not eligible.

So there's been some folks asking about this Pandora's Box show I'm curating. I'm not really ready to release who's involved but I can tell you a bit about how the idea came to me and an opening date.

The show will take place at the Good News Mountaineer Garage Gallery and will preview during the May ArtWalk in Charleston, WV. The ArtWalk takes place the third Thursday of the month. The show actually opens Friday, May 16th, and runs for three weeks.

The idea for the show came to me in a dream.......well, not really. I was actually at my buddy's house working on some website stuff. Mark Wolfe did the design for marshhouse. He will be taking part in this show. Mark is a pug-lover. One of his pug's, Pandora, is insane. She requires constant attention when in the same room.

We were working on the web stuff and Pandora was going to town scratching my leg. I tried to distract her with chewie toys to no avail. Finally, I gave in and she jumped to my lap. I thought of her name, as I stroked her snorting head, and the myth surrounding its origin.

Certainly the woman who delivered all the evil of the world couldn't have been that old. What if her box of despair and destruction contained her toys as well? What would they look like?

I looked at Mark and said, "Dude, let's do a toy show."
